Enterprise AI projects often begin with a technology question: which model should we use? A more useful starting point is the business decision the system needs to improve.
Demand forecasting, document processing, and customer support are very different problems. Each needs a clear owner, a usable workflow, and a way to tell whether the new approach is better than the current one.
Start with a decision you can describe
Replace a broad objective such as “use AI in operations” with a concrete question: which purchase orders should a planner review first each morning? That framing identifies the user, the timing, and the action the output should support.
It also makes scope easier to control. The first version might prioritize a review queue rather than automatically changing every order.
Establish a baseline before choosing a model
Record how the process works today. How long does it take? What errors matter? How often does someone override the recommendation? A spreadsheet, a rules-based process, or a manual workflow may be the right baseline.
- Choose one primary outcome, such as review time or missed exceptions.
- Define quality and safety constraints alongside that outcome.
- Keep a representative evaluation set separate from training data.
- Decide in advance what result would justify a wider rollout.
Design the handoff to people
A prediction is useful only when someone can act on it. Show the context behind a recommendation, provide a clear route for uncertain cases, and let users correct mistakes. Those corrections can reveal problems in the data or the workflow before they become larger operational issues.
Make the first release small enough to learn from
A focused pilot gives the team a chance to compare results against the baseline and observe real usage. Expand when the evidence supports it, with monitoring and ownership in place.
The aim is a better business process. The model is one component of that process, alongside data, software, and the people responsible for the outcome.
